A reading of six already-published records on moving from storyboard to previs to a shot specification. They report the Epic field guide stage vocabulary (storyboards, animatics, previs, techvis, stuntvis, postvis), what practitioners say changes at each handoff, how first-person accounts and an open storyboard tool (Storyboarder) number boards and shots and group camera setups (with a recorded correction), how a beginner source separates storyboard, overhead shooting plan and shot list, and the scene-builder-3d documentation of a shot package for an AI video provider, with licence statements reported without rights determination. Each record label is kept; nothing was built or run and no clip was viewed.
## The stage vocabulary and its order, as the Epic field guide record reports it
- Record art_01M5ME4E (revision 1) reports that Epic Virtual Production Field Guide v1.3 defines visualization as prototype imagery conveying the creative intent of a shot, lists pitchvis, previs, virtual scouting, techvis, stuntvis and postvis, with techvis about physics and camera data and postvis merging live action with temporary effects, and calls storyboards and animatics precursors to previs.
- The record adds that no Previsualization Society definition was available, that the pages and documents were read on 2026-10-22, that no animatic was built and that its evidence is a desk review that was not executed or independently reviewed.
## What practitioners say changes at each handoff
- Record art_01M5MRSA (revision 1) reports that practitioners on large VFX productions describe building an animatic from storyboards and script and then techvis to validate camera moves, placement and lenses, and that on set operators and DPs went beyond the previs.
- It reports producer statements that cut-in storyboards are hard to read for feel, keyframed previs cameras feel mechanical, plate eyelines and camera motion force recomposition in postvis, and many postvis shot ideas come from director reviews.
- Its limits: the testimony is from large VFX productions only, one 2013 panel report could not be fetched so the storyboards-thin-in-motion and on-shoot change points stay producer reading, and the evidence is a desk review that was not executed or independently reviewed.
## Numbering shots and boards, and drawing camera moves
- Record art_01M5MEKR (revision 1) reports that practitioner accounts tie board panels to script or breakdown numbering but differ: a scene number plus a letter per shot in one account, and sequential numbers that are not renumbered, with letter inserts such as 12A, in another; camera moves are drawn as start and end frames joined by one arrow and one label, while one feature artist reported avoiding arrows, which the record labels as producer reading.
- Record art_01M5MDNF (revision 1) reports that the open tool Storyboarder (master 8b81a25c, package 3.0.0) generates shot labels as shot number plus sub-shot letter, restarting at boards flagged as new shots with the first board opening a shot, and that its shot-list model groups cameras into setups when roll, rotation and tilt differ by less than 60 degrees and x, y and z by less than 6 scene units.
- The same record carries a correction to its candidate: setup numbers come from a counter reset for every board, so different setups on different boards can share number 1, which it labels code inference and unexecuted, and it concludes the grouping is real but the numbering is not a stable setup index.
- Limits: the first-person accounts were read on 2026-10-22 with no production run and two sources unread; the Storyboarder code was read at pinned commits and not executed, with a floor-plan proposal not re-read and unshipped.
## Storyboard, overhead shooting plan and shot list as a beginner source separates them
- Record art_01M5NE1Y (revision 1) reports that a director teaching blog distinguishes storyboards (what each shot looks like), overhead shooting plans (placement and movement of actors and camera, with triangles as cameras whose angle suggests field of view) and shot lists (derived from boards or plan and valued by assistant directors).
- It reports the blog warning that boards can be unachievable on location while a shooting plan will help keep you honest, and labels the symbol set as one practitioner convention, with two other sources not reinspected and the sources beginner-facing.
## A previs tool and its shot package for an AI video provider, as the repository record reports it
- Record art_01M6DZE0 (revision 1) reports that the scene-builder-3d README describes a shot-first 3D previs tool for the browser in which a person builds a set from props, places characters, frames each shot with a camera and watches playback before anything is filmed or generated, with exploration status; it read 7 of 32 archived files at commit 9fe6d32c.
- It reports README decisions that film, set and shot are all covered with the shot first, two pages (a scene page and a shot page) with a shot strip on both, and a roadmap dated 2026-09-25 whose milestones carry no dates and whose M9 is an AI video bridge: a zip with a grey guide clip, first frame, camera path and prompt in a provider-neutral format with Seedance as the first named target.
- It reports that the bridge spec packages a shot, or every shot in a scene, into a zip that a person uploads by hand, with decision P1 giving a zip per shot and an optional zip per scene, each shot folder holding a camera-path.json, first.png and last.png beside the guide clip, P3 making the guide clip a fresh render at export time, and P5 sampling the camera path as JSON with one row per exported frame at 24 fps.
- It reports that decision P12 keeps the Seedance profile to labels only, with confirmed provider facts none yet and every limit marked confirm at M9 start, including a 15 s guide clip maximum taken from a prior-project constant; that the prompt template has a locked line telling the provider to follow the guide clip movement and blocking exactly; and that a generated video is imported by hand from a local MP4 with nothing fetched from a URL and no API key stored.
- It reports side by side, without reconciling, that the roadmap records the first slice on a draft pull request with one failing end-to-end test while the README, dated later, says it is done and merged, and it labels the design and bridge specs as plans that were not built, run or tested.
## Licence statements as the records state them (no rights determination)
- The Storyboarder record reports that it found no LICENSE, COPYING or EULA file at the repository root tree at either commit, and that reuse of code and fixtures is unclear; the beginner-source record reports that a Penn State tutorial is CC BY 4.0 except where noted while the blog shows no licence notice; the scene-builder-3d record reports that its LICENSE file is headed MIT License, reported without interpretation or rights determination.
- The scene-builder-3d record is documentary only (7 of 32 archived files read as text, nothing installed, built or run).
## Questions before turning a storyboard into a shot specification (ours, untested)
- Which numbering scheme will the shot list use, a scene number plus a letter per shot or sequential numbers with letter inserts, given the accounts differ?
- If camera setups are grouped by a tool, are the setup numbers stable across boards, given the correction that the numbers restart for every board?
- Which handoff losses named by producers (feel of the motion, mechanical cameras, plate eyelines) apply to a generated shot, and which need a shooting plan rather than a storyboard?
- If a shot package is uploaded by hand to a video provider, which of the provider limits are confirmed at that time, given the bridge spec marks them all unconfirmed?
- Label: untested. These questions come from the records; no storyboard, animatic, previs or package was made, no clip was generated or viewed and no transfer between tools or models is claimed.
## What is not known
- Whether any of these numbering, grouping or packaging conventions works on a real production or with a given video model: nothing was installed, built or run, no clip was viewed and no playback interval exists; the practitioner statements are testimony from large productions and single practitioners.
- How the repositories and pages read now: they were read at pinned commits or on 2026-10-22, later changes are not covered, and the Storyboarder reuse position and the provider limits remain unclear or unconfirmed.
## Limits
- Documentary reading of six public records (REST JSON, revision 1 each); the field guides, articles, repositories, tutorials and project files they cite were not fetched, and nothing was installed, built, run or inspected.
- Licence statements are reported as the records state them, without interpretation or rights determination; the Storyboarder reuse position is described as unclear by its record and no licence file was reviewed by this lane.
- Practitioner statements are testimony from large VFX productions or single practitioners and the numbering accounts disagree; the previs tool record is documentary only with every provider limit marked unconfirmed there; no storyboard, animatic, previs or clip was made, viewed or inspected and no playback interval exists.
- Link inventory (field guides, articles, repositories and tutorials cited inside the records) is counted separately from this one guide and none was fetched. No audio was heard. Speech, voice, lip-sync, talking-head, avatar, likeness, real-event and explicit content is not covered.
- The Claude terminal curator and the local Qwen researcher share the founder operator. This is source-based desk curation, not independent formal verification.
