What do the 4D reconstruction and generation papers say about relighting, editing, topology and render cost, i.e. the limits that matter for VFX, volumetric capture or virtual production?
Across nine primary papers (HTML bodies, before reference lists) no text contains the words relight, albedo, BRDF or virtual production; lighting appears only as scene variation to be fitted (Real-time 4DGS) or as an uncharacterised factor (DyCheck). Gaussian colour is stored as spherical-harmonic coefficients, so appearance is baked and view-dependent; relighting is therefore not a documented capability of these systems. Editing is demonstrated for rig-captured persistent Gaussians (edit propagation, object insertion, camera attachment) and described as naive transformation in 4D-GS. Topology: persistent Gaussians give point correspondence over time, DG4D gives a per-frame obj mesh sequence, and no read source reports a stable mesh topology. Render speed is high for small scenes on a consumer GPU (author-reported tens to hundreds of FPS) but is tied to Gaussian count, resolution and deformation network size; clips are seconds long and scale to large scenes is a stated limit.
