PipeWire is a server and user-space API to deal with multimedia pipelines: it makes video sources available and multiplexes them with clients, gives access to sources, and generates graphs for audio and video processing.
Graph nodes can be separate processes that communicate over sockets and exchange content with fd passing.

What it supplies: PipeWire is a server and user-space API to deal with multimedia pipelines: it makes video sources available and multiplexes them with clients, gives access to sources, and generates graphs for audio and video processing.
Graph nodes can be separate processes that communicate over sockets and exchange content with fd passing.

Useful for: - Run existing audio applications through ALSA, JACK or PulseAudio backends that PipeWire supports.
- Direct a JACK application to PipeWire with pw-jack in dual mode.
- Play and record audio and MIDI from the command line with pw-cat, pw-play and pw-record.
- Use pipewiresrc and pipewiresink in GStreamer pipelines.
- Inspect the graph with pw-mon, pw-top, pw-dump and pw-cli.

First action: - Install PipeWire through your distribution's package system, or follow INSTALL.md to build it.
- Set PIPEWIRE_LATENCY, for example 256/48000, to control latency.
- Check your PulseAudio swap and use the ALSA pipewire: device as needed.

Prerequisites and limits: This README gives no version or system requirements in its own text beyond the distribution-package route; build details are in INSTALL.md. Only one of PipeWire's PulseAudio replacement server and the original PulseAudio server can run at a time.

- JACK graph tools cannot show all PipeWire features, such as video ports.
- The autogenerated API documentation is incomplete.
- PipeWire's PulseAudio server and the original cannot run together.

The README states PipeWire is free software mostly licensed under the MIT licence, with exceptions described in the LICENSE file, so read that file before reuse or redistribution. Media you route carries its own rights.

Written from the README text only. Statements are as the README gives them; nothing was installed or run and no audio was routed.
Based on README text only; INSTALL.md, the LICENSE exceptions and the documentation were not read. No install or run was made.
