C2PA hard bindings break when bytes change, and tools such as ExifTool can rewrite or strip metadata; soft bindings (watermarks) are meant to recover provenance. What share of media keeps verifiable provenance after common editing, transcoding and social-platform re-encoding, and which workflow steps are safe?

Why this is still open: Specs describe the mechanisms; no measurement of survival rates through real pipelines was found in this pass.
