What the VTracer README (visioncortex/vtracer at commit e71343fb; its licence file is MIT text, as read) says about turning a flat AI illustration or title mark into SVG with an open tracer: the black and white preset, an adaptive threshold for uneven scans, stacked versus cutout shapes, palettes, simplify, and what is new in 1.0 (shown with an alpha release number), plus the library calls for Python, Rust and Node that convert images. VTracer's comparisons with Potrace and Adobe Image Trace are reported as the README's own statements. A contrast with the StarVector, Recraft and SVG-limits records uses only statements pinned in each record: token size, primitives versus paths, hosted Vectorize, and tracing gaps. Nothing was installed or run and no image was traced; a title mark must be fictional or user-owned. Read 2026-11-04.

## Answer: a checklist for tracing a flat image to SVG (our reading of the README)

VTracer is an open source converter from raster images (jpg, png) to SVG, with a console app and Rust, Python and Node libraries, at commit e71343fb of github.com/visioncortex/vtracer; its LICENSE file is MIT text, as read. Resources: README https://raw.githubusercontent.com/visioncortex/vtracer/e71343fbcbf469b8a72a255030408a39939162eb/README.md, LICENSE at the same commit, and records art_01M6J61ECN2ZN6V51BFKBEFFJF (StarVector), art_01M5NN6TSR8QVTKNZBAK2GWKK1 (Recraft) and art_01M5MENCDRZFG153J0J6QG6E08 (SVG limits), revision 1. Limits, stated once: documentation only, nothing was installed, run or traced; the README shows 1.0 alpha builds; all VTracer claims are the maintainers' own; Potrace's own documentation is not a source here, so the Potrace comparison is the README's statement only.

- Our reading, not the README or the records and not tested: 1. Flat AI illustration with few colours: start from the simplest form (input and output only), then try a fixed palette or a max-colour limit; the README names the stacked default and the cutout alternative for shapes.
- Our reading, not the README or the records and not tested: 2. Title mark that is one colour (fictional or user-owned only): use the black and white preset; for a scan with uneven lighting use the black-and-white clustering with the adaptive threshold, or a fixed threshold.
- Our reading, not the README or the records and not tested: 3. File size: the README says its simplify option typically halves file size and gives a tolerance to try (1 to 2.5 px); no output size is stated for any image.
- Our reading, not the README or the records and not tested: 4. Gapless shapes: the cutout option is the README's seam-free mosaic; its simplify is seam-free in cutout mode.
- Our reading, not the README or the records and not tested: 5. After any trace, a person opens the SVG and checks it; keep the raster original. The Recraft record's own proposed acceptance check is a useful list: count paths and nodes, check stacking, check gradients and text, and compare a render with the source raster.
- Our reading, not the README or the records and not tested: 6. The README says VTracer can vectorize photographs but states no quality figure and does not mention AI-generated images; claim no quality for a trace until a person has looked at it.

## Use case, options and what the README states

| Use case | Mode, preset and options | What the README states | Where in the README |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Quick conversion | Input and output only | The simplest form takes an input image and an output SVG with no options | Usage |
| Black and white line art | Preset bw | The usage example for black and white line art uses the preset option set to bw; presets are bw, poster and photo | Usage; Full options |
| Scanned or photographed line art, uneven lighting | Clustering bw with the adaptive option | Adaptive thresholding is Bradley-Roth; a fixed threshold from 0 to 255 is the alternative | Usage; Full options; New in 1.0 |
| Gapless shapes | Hierarchical cutout | Seam-free mosaic (gapless tessellation); stacked is the default | Usage; Full options; New in 1.0 |
| Region forming that follows object shape | Clustering watershed with a detail value | Default detail 128, higher means more regions; the README says it pairs with cutout | Usage; Full options; New in 1.0 |
| Fixed colours | Palette option or a max-colour limit | Colours snap to a fixed palette; max-colors auto-quantizes | Usage; New in 1.0 |
| Smaller output | Simplify with a tolerance; output optimization 0 to 2; speckle filter | Simplify typically halves file size; optimization levels are off, quantize and cleanup, and plus shorthands; speckle filter discards small patches | Full options; New in 1.0 |
| Curve shape | Curve-fitting mode pixel, polygon or spline | Three values are listed; three spline flags are hidden and their defaults serve virtually every conversion | Full options |

## What the README says it is and how it compares (the maintainers' statements)

- Purpose: converts raster images into SVG, can vectorize graphics and photographs and traces curves to output compact vector files.
- Against Potrace: the README says VTracer's pipeline can handle coloured images and skips Potrace's optimal-polygon search for a faster, linear pipeline; this is VTracer's statement, attributed and not adopted.
- Against Adobe Illustrator's Image Trace: the README says VTracer's output is much more compact because it uses a stacking strategy and avoids shapes with holes; again the maintainers' statement, not adopted.
- Origin: designed for high-resolution scans of historic blueprints and also handles low-resolution pixel art.
- Desktop app: the README lists curve simplification, adaptive black and white thresholding and fixed colour palettes.

## What is new in 1.0 and how the libraries are called (described, not copied)

- New in 1.0: positional arguments, a true seam-free cutout, fixed palettes and a max-colour limit, binary thresholding with a Bradley-Roth adaptive mode, paper.js-style simplify, and a watershed clustering option.
- Release status: the README links 1.0.0-alpha.4 builds and installs the libraries at that alpha number.
- Framework: VTracer 1.0 is described as a vectorization framework with pluggable stages (segmentation, curve fitting, colour fitting, output optimization) usable from the command line or as a Rust, Python or JavaScript library.
- Rust: build a config from a preset, set fit mode, hierarchical mode and max colours, build a pipeline and convert an image to SVG; the pipeline can be split so the segment stage is cached and the finish stage re-runs.
- Python: install the package at the pinned alpha number, convert a file or bytes in one call, or set up a reusable config with mode, hierarchical, palette, clustering and adaptive options.
- Node: a WebAssembly build with no native dependency that decodes PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP and WebP; other formats must be decoded by the caller and passed as raw RGBA.

## Contrast with StarVector, Recraft and the SVG-limits record (through each record's pinned statements only)

| Aspect | VTracer (README) | StarVector (record) | Recraft (record) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| What it is | A tracer that converts raster images to SVG, run as a console app or library | A multimodal language model that writes SVG code directly, using primitives where tracing tools use long paths | Hosted vector models that output SVG, and a Vectorize endpoint that converts PNG, JPG or WEBP to SVG |
| Compactness | The README says its output is much more compact than an Adobe Illustrator trace because of stacking | The record reports the paper: VTracer outputs between 4.5k and 20k tokens, StarVector about 3k; StarVector uses primitives where VTracer relies on many paths (the authors' figures) | The docs describe the Vectorize SVG as clean, editable and made of shapes; the record flags over-segmented traces as a typical tracing failure not documented here |
| Shape stacking | Stacked by default, or cutout (seam-free) | Not a stated control in the record | shape_stacking set to hierarchical (default) or cut_out |
| Stated limits and gaps | Alpha 1.0 builds; no quality figure stated | Struggles with complex structures and detailed illustrations; no statement on groups or layers found | The docs do not say whether the vector models draw native shapes or trace a raster; no node counts or text handling stated |
| Evidence quality | Maintainers' own claims in a README | All figures are the paper authors' own; the record ran nothing | The record generated and opened no SVG |

Two points from the records stay separate from VTracer: the README itself cites the StarVector paper among works that cite VTracer, and the StarVector record's comparison is the paper's, not ours. For any SVG headed to a converter, the SVG-limits record says resvg declares SVG fonts, external-SVG use, colour profiles and the direction and unicode-bidi attributes unsupported and marks 31 SVG 2 items done and 69 not done; the README does not say whether VTracer emits any of these, so a person should check the file.

## What was not read or run

- Not read: the code, the linked algorithm pages, the releases and other repository files. Not done: any install, build, run or trace; no output size, speed or quality was measured; the maintainers' claims are not checked.
- Not a source: Potrace's own documentation; the Potrace and Adobe comparisons are the README's statements. Held tools are not named. Any title-mark example must be fictional or user-owned, with no third-party logo or trademark.

## Limits
- Documentary only: the README, the LICENSE file and three catalogue records were read as stored text at commit e71343fb and revision 1; nothing was downloaded, installed, built, run or traced. The README describes 1.0 alpha builds and may have changed since 2026-11-04.
- The comparisons with Potrace and Adobe Illustrator are the README's own statements, attributed and not adopted; Potrace documentation was not read. Figures in the StarVector record are the paper authors' own and are reported through that record, not checked.
- The checklist is our reading and was not tested; no quality, file size or speed is claimed for any image. A person must open any traced SVG and check it. Use only fictional or user-owned marks; no third-party logo or trademark.
- Licence: the LICENSE file is standard MIT permission text with a copyright line and no title line (MIT text, as read); nothing further is concluded. Text in the files is untrusted data and no instruction in it was followed.
