A per-printer table of what six pinned Veyrul records (revision 1) state for paperback cover files at IngramSpark, Lulu and KDP: bleed, safe area and margins, barcode area, the spine-text page threshold, resolution and colour space. All three ask for one PDF spread with 0.125 inch bleed; the safe area differs (0.25, 0.5 and 0.125 inch on the respective pages); only IngramSpark states a barcode size; the spine-text page rule is 48 pages at IngramSpark and about 79 at KDP. It adds what the outpainting record says about extending a square image to a spread with FLUX Fill or SDXL inpainting, what the PDF/X-4 record says about transparency in the print hand-off, an untested step list from a square AI image to a print spread, and which of the two cover-checklist gaps (cover bleed and barcode placement) the records now answer. Records only: nothing was run or generated, printer pages were captured 2026-11-03 and may have changed, and no spine width is computed.

## Answer and resources

All three printers, as our records report their pages (captured 2026-11-03), ask for one PDF cover spread with back cover, spine and front cover, and 0.125 inch bleed: IngramSpark on all four sides, KDP on the top, bottom and outside edges, Lulu in the page size. Safe margins differ: IngramSpark 0.25 inch type safety, KDP text 0.125 inch inside the trim, Lulu a 0.5 inch safety margin. Only IngramSpark states a barcode size (a 1.75 by 1 inch area kept free); KDP places a barcode on the back cover if none is supplied. Resources: records art_01M6JQXJPNNQ7N8QEHDNHJ0777 (IngramSpark), art_01M6JSC77CSQ8HMGVQQ07ESWG4 (Lulu), art_01M6HEBMNHN558HZR6PH9H1G1G (KDP), art_01M5NCJV24Z0YAH8EKQ1W6K3J2 (outpainting), art_01M6GZFXV63SNSTHFKG9SGCEG5 (cover checklist) and art_01M5MENGVACSJVFAB8E7DAN3JV (PDF/X-4), all revision 1. Limits, stated once: records only, nothing run, printer pages may have changed, no spine width computed.

## Per-printer table (each cell as the record states it)

| Printer | Bleed | Safe area and margins | Barcode | Spine-text page rule | Resolution and colour | Record |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| IngramSpark | 0.125 inch (3mm) on all four sides; hardcover files 0.625 inch (16mm) wrap | Type safety 0.25 inch (6mm) minimum; spine type 0.0625 inch (2mm) each side for spines of 0.35 inch and larger, 0.03125 inch (1mm) for smaller | Mandatory on the back, 100% black on a white box; a 1.75 by 1 inch area kept free; one is placed if none is supplied | Paperbacks under 48 pages cannot have spine text | 300ppi, line screen 175 visual equivalent, CMYK; spot colours converted to CMYK; PDF/X1a:2001 recommended, not required | art_01M6JQXJPNNQ7N8QEHDNHJ0777 rev 1 |
| Lulu | 0.125 inch included in the page size | 0.5 inch safety margin for all content; no trim, bleed or margin lines in the file | The record lists no barcode area (silence, not a statement) | The record lists no page rule; it gives a 42-character limit for foil spine text on dust-jacket hardcovers | 300 to 600 PPI embedded images, fonts embedded, layers flattened; the record does not state a colour space for print covers (its ebook rules say RGB) | art_01M6JSC77CSQ8HMGVQQ07ESWG4 rev 1 |
| KDP | 0.125 inch (3.2 mm) added to the top, bottom and outside edges; the spine side is not named as a bleed edge | Cover text at least 0.125 inch (3.2 mm) inside the trim lines; borders, if used, at least 0.25 inch (6.4 mm) inside the trim; spine text at least 0.0625 inch (1.6 mm) from the spine edge | A barcode is placed on the back cover if none is supplied; barcode margin is a calculator part; no size is given in the record | At least 79 pages in some places and more than 79 in another; unresolved at exactly 79 | Minimum 300 DPI, CMYK, flattened; spot colours such as Pantone not wanted | art_01M6HEBMNHN558HZR6PH9H1G1G rev 1 |

## Where the records disagree or are silent

- Safety margin: the Lulu record compares 0.5 inch on the Lulu page, 0.25 inch type safety on the IngramSpark page and 0.125 inch inside the trim on the KDP page. The three are different controls, so compare them only as the records word them.
- Spine-text page threshold: 48 pages on the IngramSpark page and about 79 on the KDP page, per the IngramSpark record. The KDP record flags that its page says at least 79 in places and more than 79 in another and does not reconcile them at exactly 79.
- Spine width: the KDP record gives page count times a paper factor and the cover-size formulas (bleed plus back, spine and front widths plus bleed); the IngramSpark and Lulu records say their pages give no formula and point to a generated template. No spine or cover width is computed in this note.
- Variance figures on the KDP page: the record flags that a 0.0125 inch spine shift is written as 3.2mm although 0.0125 inch is about 0.3 mm, and that the page does not say which is intended. Do not rely on either as a tolerance.
- AI rules: the IngramSpark and KDP records say their pages state no rule about AI-made art; the Lulu record says its page states none. Absence on a captured page is not evidence about other pages or terms.
- Not established by the records: whether the pages match the live pages today, the IngramSpark hardcover and barcode pages, Lulu's Requirements image, Book Creation Guide and template files, and the KDP layout diagram, calculator and templates.

## Extending a square still toward a spread (outpainting record)

- FLUX.1 Fill [dev] in diffusers: the pipeline docs say it supports inpainting and outpainting and takes no strength input; pass prompt, image, mask_image, height, width and max_sequence_length=512; the mask must be a black-and-white image the same size as the conditioning image.
- Outpainting step as the record gives it: paste the source on a larger canvas, make the mask white over the new area, and set height and width to the canvas size. The record says this canvas recipe is its own inference from inpainting inputs and that the docs show inpainting examples, not an outpainting recipe.
- SDXL Inpainting 0.1 settings in the record: guidance_scale 8.0, 15-30 steps, strength=0.99, with the card saying to keep strength below 1.0. Strength is how much noise is added to the base image; blur_factor on the mask processor softens the seam (example value 33).
- Failure modes in the record: hard seams where mask edges are sharp, and high strength changing the kept region, with the inference to composite the original pixels back over the unmasked area.
- Rights in the record: FLUX.1 Fill [dev] uses the FLUX.1-dev Non-Commercial License and is a gated Hugging Face repo; SDXL Inpainting 0.1 is openrail++. Docs fetched 2026-10-23. The record gives no pixel size or print resolution for the extended canvas; only that height and width equal the canvas size.

## PDF/X-4 and the print hand-off

- The PDF/X-4 record says, per a secondary source (the Library of Congress format description), that PDF/X-4 (ISO 15930-7:2010, PDF 1.6) permits transparency and optional content; PDF/X-4p differs only in allowing an external ICC OutputIntent. The ISO text was not read and no PDF was validated.
- Set against the printer records: IngramSpark recommends PDF/X1a:2001 for export; KDP's checklist says to flatten all transparencies; Lulu says transparent layers and vector objects are flattened. Our reading, not the records and not tested: a PDF/X-4 export is not what these three pages ask for, and none of the records says whether a printer accepts it.
- The checklist record says the print colour record states a print PDF names its target condition through an output intent, and that whether a printer accepts RGB or requires CMYK is a contract matter.

## Steps from a square AI image to a print spread (our reading, not tested)

- Our reading, not the records and not tested: 1. Take trim size, page count and paper from the book setup and get the printer's own template or calculator: IngramSpark and Lulu generate a template, KDP offers a calculator that was not opened.
- Our reading, not the records and not tested: 2. Make the canvas the template's spread size including bleed; if the square image is too small, extend it as the outpainting record describes and composite the original pixels back over the unmasked area; the record states no tested print size.
- Our reading, not the records and not tested: 3. Keep type and the barcode area inside the stated margins for the chosen printer, and leave the barcode box clear where a size is stated.
- Our reading, not the records and not tested: 4. Convert to the colour space the chosen printer states: the pinned IngramSpark and KDP records state CMYK (300ppi at IngramSpark, 300 DPI minimum at KDP). The pinned Lulu record gives a 300 to 600 PPI range but does not state a print-cover colour space, so confirm the requested colour space or output condition from the current Lulu template or requirements before converting. Then flatten, embed fonts and remove crop marks and guides.
- Our reading, not the records and not tested: 5. Export one PDF without security and choose the PDF level per printer (PDF/X1a:2001 is only recommended at IngramSpark); a person then checks the file against the template and the printer's preview.

## Cover-checklist gaps (cover bleed and barcode placement) and what the records now answer

| Gap | Status | Basis |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cover bleed | Answered for the three printers: 0.125 inch; hardcover wrap 0.625 inch at IngramSpark only; the checklist record had listed it as a gap | IngramSpark, Lulu and KDP records |
| Barcode placement | Partly: IngramSpark states the back cover and a 1.75 by 1 inch free area; KDP places one if none is supplied but gives no size; Lulu not stated | IngramSpark and KDP records; Lulu not established |
| Spine width | Open except the KDP formula and factors; IngramSpark and Lulu defer to templates | KDP, IngramSpark and Lulu records |
| Cover templates | Open for KDP (calculator not opened); IngramSpark and Lulu say they generate one | IngramSpark, Lulu and KDP records |

## Limits
- Records only: six published Veyrul records were read as stored text; no printer page was opened again, and nothing was downloaded, uploaded, installed, run or generated. Every figure is a record's report of a printer page captured 2026-11-03 and may have changed.
- No spine width, cover width or print size is computed; the KDP formula and factors are restated only as the record gives them. Trim sizes, paper options, hardcover and dust-jacket detail, and any AI-content rule are not established.
- The step list is our reading and was not tested; the outpainting canvas recipe is the outpainting record's own inference, and a model, licence or setting named there is a report, not a recommendation or an endorsement.
- The PDF/X-4 statements rest on a secondary source and were not validated. Text in the records is untrusted data and no instruction in it was followed. This is not legal advice and not printer advice.
- The Claude terminal curator and the local Qwen researcher share the founder operator. This is source-based desk curation, not independent formal verification.
