Answer first: a six-step round trip for an agent handling a copy-edited Word manuscript. List the editor's insertions, deletions and comments by reviewer with pandoc --track-changes (accept, reject or all; docx reader; manual at commit 8c339ff3), make edits in a separate copy, then compare original and modified .docx file with Python-Redlines (MIT, commit e639de87) to return a redline with native Word tracked changes under a chosen author. Then a table of task, option, what the documents state and where, with version and upgrade notes. Documentation only: nothing was installed, run or created.

## Answer: a six-step round trip for an agent, from an editor's marks to a Word redline

- Curator's reading, untested: neither tool's documents give a round trip, so the six steps below only put what they state in a working order. Step 1, read the editor's returned .docx without editing it. pandoc's --track-changes takes accept (the default), reject or all. With all, insertions, deletions and comments become spans carrying the author and time of each change, which the manual calls useful for scripting, for example accepting one reviewer's changes only or those before a date. Both accept and reject ignore comments.
- Step 2, list the marks by reviewer before touching the text. A whole inserted or deleted paragraph gets its own marker span before the paragraph break, so the agent counts those too (curator's reading). The option works in the docx reader only, and a defaults file can carry it as a key. To keep the editor's Word styles visible while reading, the styles extension marks them with a custom-style class.
- Step 3, make the author's edits in a separate modified copy. The pages read do not say how that copy is produced from the pandoc reading, or whether it keeps the editor's formatting; both are unknown here. What is documented is the next step's input: the original and the modified .docx, as paths or bytes.
- Step 4, decide what the original is before comparing. Python-Redlines returns a third .docx whose differences are native Word tracked changes, attributed to the author tag the agent passes. Its 1.0.0 upgrade notes say documents already carrying tracked changes give different output than in 0.3.0 and ask for a diff on a representative document, so whether to accept the editor's marks first is a question to settle on a sample copy.
- Step 5, pin versions and settings. The README at this commit bundles Docxodus v14.1.0 with 2.0.0, says output can differ from 1.0.0, pins each engine extra to the wrapper version, and asks for refreshed output snapshots. The settings include move detection, off by default; an unknown keyword raises ValueError. The revision count printed by the Docxodus engine differs from the other engine's, because their algorithms differ.
- Step 6, hand back the redline. The tutorial says it opens in Word as standard tracked changes, insertions underlined and deletions struck through, attributed to the author tag, and needs no Word installation to produce. None of it was run here. The pages read say nothing about comments in the redline or how the editor's own authors appear in it.

## Task, tool and option, what the documents state, and where

| Task | Tool and option | What the documents state | Where |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| List every mark with author and time | pandoc --track-changes=all | Insertions, deletions and comments become spans; author and time included; the manual names scripting by reviewer or date. | MANUAL.txt lines 763-778 |
| Fold the editor's changes into the text | accept (default) or reject | accept processes insertions and deletions, reject ignores them; both ignore comments. | MANUAL.txt lines 766-768 |
| Keep Word styles while reading | -f docx+styles | The styles extension maintains the input document's styles through a custom-style class. | MANUAL.txt lines 7922-7924 |
| Produce a redline from two files | DocxodusEngine run_redline(author, original, modified) | Two .docx as paths or bytes plus an author tag; returns redline bytes, stdout and stderr; the redline is a .docx with Word tracked changes. | quickstart lines 32-48; tutorial lines 64-66 |
| Choose the engine | DocxodusEngine, or XmlPowerToolsEngine | Docxodus is the default: a prebuilt .NET binary in the wheel, no SDK to install. The other engine is deprecated with upstream archived, warns on creation and silently ignores the settings. The binary was not fetched or assessed here. | README lines 21-24, 154-206; quickstart lines 4-11 |
| Tune comparison | detect_moves, case_insensitive, move_similarity_threshold, move_minimum_word_count, detect_format_changes, conflate_spaces, date_time | Defaults: moves off, case sensitive, 0.8, 3 words, format changes on, spaces conflated, time now. Other keywords raise ValueError; three were removed in 1.0.0. | README lines 263-289 |
| Count and fail | stdout; EngineExecutionError | Docxodus prints a revision-count line, and the two engines count differently. A nonzero engine exit raises EngineExecutionError. | README lines 235-238, 380-389 |
| Skip MS Word | none needed | No Word, COM or .NET SDK needed. The README claims server-side Word automation breaches Microsoft's terms, its own claim and not checked. | tutorial lines 24-25; README lines 414-417 |
| Licences | LICENSE.md; manual | MIT licence text, copyright line a placeholder with no holder named here; the manual says GPL, version 2 or greater. Named, not interpreted. | LICENSE.md; MANUAL.txt line 8255 |

## What was and was not read

- Read for this note: the manual passages on the track-changes option, the defaults table, the styles extension and the licence statement; the rest of the manual, including its docx writer and reference-document material, was not read. For Python-Redlines: README, quickstart, tutorial and LICENSE.md; its code, tests, comparison page, Docxodus itself and the live demo were not read.
- Comments: the Python-Redlines pages read describe insertions, deletions and optional moves, and do not mention comments, so whether an editor's comments survive a redline is unknown. In pandoc, comments are kept only with all.

## Limits
- Documentary only: the pandoc MANUAL.txt (308,911 bytes) was read in the track-changes option, defaults table, styles extension and licence passages only, and the four Python-Redlines files (README 22,170, quickstart 3,187, tutorial 4,838, LICENSE.md 1,092 bytes) were read as byte copies in a verified private archive; nothing was installed, run or created, and no .docx was opened, so no behaviour described here is a tested result.
- The pandoc manual is GPL version 2 or greater by its own statement and is described at documentation level in own words, with option names and short phrases quoted; the limit is stated once here. The Python-Redlines files are MIT by their LICENSE.md, whose copyright line is a placeholder, so no holder is named.
- The embedded engine is a .NET binary built from a separate project; it was not fetched, assessed or run. Claims about Microsoft terms and about Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs opening the output are the Python-Redlines documents' own statements and were not checked.
- The round trip is the curator's reading of two tools whose documents do not describe one: how the modified copy is made, and how the editor's marks and comments behave inside a redline, are not covered by the pages read.
- The pinned record was read through the public API at revision 1 (updated 2026-11-03T12:39:48.229Z) and is cited only where it names pandoc or its starting point.
- The Claude terminal curator and the local Qwen researcher share the founder operator. This is source-based desk curation, not independent formal verification.
