The HyperFrames README describes it as an Apache 2.0 framework that renders HTML, CSS, media and seekable animations to deterministic MP4. This note, from 15 documentation files in a partial-docs packet, lists the composition format (data-composition-id, data-start, data-duration, class clip, a paused timeline registered on window.__timelines), the CLI commands (init, preview, lint, check, render), requirements (Node.js 22+, FFmpeg), formats, rendering paths, agent skills and what the repo docs say about Remotion. Documentary only: no source code read, nothing installed or run.

## What it is

- HyperFrames is described by its README as an open-source (Apache 2.0) framework that turns HTML, CSS, media and seekable animations into deterministic MP4 video, used locally through a CLI, from coding agents through skills, or as the rendering core behind hosted authoring.
- The repository licence file is the Apache License, Version 2.0.
- The docs say it is inspired by Remotion: both render with headless Chrome and FFmpeg, and the difference is what you write, a React component in Remotion and an HTML file in HyperFrames. The FAQ states that HyperFrames does not use or run Remotion.

## Composition format

- A composition is an HTML file; elements carry data-* timing attributes and the framework turns them into frames.
- A root element needs data-composition-id (with data-start, data-width and data-height on the top-level root); every timed element needs class clip so the runtime can hide it outside its time window. At the default 30 frames per second a five-second composition is 150 frames.
- The README example puts a video, a title and an audio element on a stage with data-start, data-duration and data-track-index, and registers one paused GSAP timeline on window.__timelines under the root id.
- A numeric data-start is seconds; a clip id as the value means start when that clip ends, with plus or minus seconds for a gap or overlap, inside the same composition only. The track index is an editor lane: the render ignores it, it does not set paint order (CSS z-index does) and two clips on one track may overlap.
- An explicit root data-duration is the render length; Three.js, unbounded animation and timeline-free compositions need one. A nested composition is either inline or a separate file named by data-composition-src whose content sits in a template, and its paths resolve from the project root, not from the referencing file.
- Variables are declared on the sub-composition root and read in script, so one source file can appear several times with different content; the compositions command lists what a project holds.

## Timing and motion rules

- HTML sets what plays and when; scripts do the motion. The docs forbid using a script to play, pause or seek media or to show or hide clips by time because it fights the framework, and name three rules for a composition to render: clip class with id, start, duration and track attributes, a timeline created paused, and registration on window.__timelines under the root id. Missing the last gives a still frame with no motion.
- Built in, the browser runtime seeks GSAP, CSS, Anime.js, Lottie, Three.js, Web Animations and TypeGPU animation; a FrameAdapter interface for custom hosts is marked experimental v0.
- A custom adapter must report a finite frame count, support forward, backward and random seeks, return the same state for the same frame, avoid wall-clock timers and unseeded randomness, and finish asynchronous work before capture.

## Media attributes

- data-volume is a static gain where 1 is 0 dB and values up to 3.98 (+12 dB) boost; data-playback-rate runs from 0.1 to 10. The schema notes that data-media-start and data-playback-start are read by different parts of the tool, and a video authored with only data-playback-start renders a trimmed picture over untrimmed audio.

## How a render works

- Rendering never plays the video: it asks for one frame at a time, computes time as frame divided by fps with integer math, seeks every animation to that moment, captures the pixels and encodes with FFmpeg.
- The determinism rules the docs give: no wall clock, no unseeded randomness, no fetching mid-render, fixed output size and a finite length. A local render can shift by a pixel between machines; the docs suggest a Docker render, which pins the Chromium version, the font set and the FFmpeg encoder.
- Preview plays in real time and can stutter; render is seek-driven and, per the docs, never drops a frame however expensive that frame is.

## Commands

- The normal workflow is lint, check, then render; check opens the project in a browser and looks for runtime, layout, motion, media and contrast problems. Without an output flag the result goes under renders/. The README manual route is init, preview, render.
- The render command takes the project directory as its argument and -c to point at one composition file; it stops when its launching process exits unless started detached. In an interactive terminal preview stays attached; in an agent session it starts a managed background preview with status, stop, list and kill-all controls.
- Transparent output: WebM for web overlays or MOV (ProRes 4444) for editing, with the composition background left unpainted, and the result checked over a contrasting background. GIF has no audio and is capped at 30 fps; HLS writes a directory. The docs give CRF 16 as the default quality and describe a draft quality for faster review renders.
- Audio helpers: audio measures onsets, peaks, loudness and silence; normalize-audio is a dry run unless --write is passed.
- Other commands: doctor checks Chrome, FFmpeg and Node.js; publish uploads a project and is private by default; add installs catalog blocks.

## Requirements and cost

- Node.js 22 or newer and FFmpeg; the Claude Code guide adds npm and a signed-in Claude account.
- Local rendering is free and needs no account; HeyGen voices, avatars and cloud rendering bill through their own accounts, and the coding agent bills its own plan.
- The FAQ says the CLI and skills run on Windows including PowerShell, and the Studio app covers 64-bit Intel and AMD Windows but not Windows on Arm. Without a HeyGen account voice uses Kokoro locally; the FAQ gives one measured render of 9.8 seconds, 25 seconds with one expensive CSS declaration left in.

## Skills and agents

- The repo ships skills that teach coding agents the project format, animation rules, media workflow and validation loop. The README counts 7: a core set of /hyperframes, /hyperframes-cli, /hyperframes-registry and /media-use, and figma, slideshow and remotion-to-hyperframes on demand. The registry skill covers about 450 ready-made blocks and components installed as editable source.
- Install routes: a Claude Code plugin from a marketplace, or npx skills add; for non-interactive agents npx hyperframes skills update installs the core set and skills check reports freshness.
- Prompt shapes the docs give: a ten-second product intro using the plugin skill, and a paste-in prompt that installs the skills, makes the video and opens the preview. For a longer story the agent first offers three storylines.

## Rendering paths and data

- The overview maps needs to surfaces: CLI for local or CI, Producer for a Node application, Engine for exact frame capture, HyperFrames Cloud for no infrastructure; the advice is to choose the highest-level surface that completes the job. The CLI owns project loading, checks, browser capture, audio mixing and encoding, and cloud rendering uses the cloud render command.
- Cloud renders upload the project to HeyGen; local preview and render keep it on the computer; the FAQ says CLI usage data stays anonymous until you sign in, and can be turned off with hyperframes telemetry disable. This is the repository documentation claim, not verified implementation behaviour. A hosted connector can build and render in a HeyGen account from a chat product.

## Against Remotion, as the docs tell it

- The vs-Remotion guide says the renderer pauses and seeks the animation before each frame, while Remotion code reads the frame number; it lists Remotion as source-available with its own licence terms.
- It reports one run each of the same one-paragraph request to an agent, with times of 12 min 30 s and 11 min 50 s, 1,037 lines in ten TypeScript files versus 822 lines in four HTML files, and says a single run decides nothing about quality. It is a vendor-written result and was not repeated here.
- The guide concedes that Remotion is older, more established and has a more mature Lambda renderer, and that its model is simpler; HyperFrames asks you to follow rules and breaks quietly if you do not. For HyperFrames it claims no React, build step or component rewrite is needed; both render on AWS Lambda and HyperFrames also renders locally, on HeyGen cloud and on Cloud Run.
- A migration skill is documented, which flags React state machines, async metadata and third-party UI libraries instead of translating them.

## Failure modes the docs state

- A timeline that is not registered under the root id gives a still frame; a script that plays or seeks media fights the framework; a trimmed video with only data-playback-start gets untrimmed audio; a transparent file can look opaque in a player that shows black behind alpha.
- Local renders can differ by a pixel across machines; when something fails the docs ask for doctor, lint and check output first.

## What is not known

Only 15 documentation files of a 998-file packet were read, so no source code, skill definition file, registry block or release note was read and the behaviour of the commands is the documented behaviour only. Nothing was installed, built or rendered here, so none of the install, preview or render steps are tested, and the claims about Remotion are the repository docs own statements.

## Limits
- PARTIAL DOCS: the archived BULK packet held 998 files (11.7 MB) because it stopped at its 999-file cap; this note read only 15 of them, so it is not a complete account of the repository.
- Documentary only: nothing was installed, built or rendered, no hosted HeyGen feature was used, and install, preview and render steps are untested.
- No source code under the package folders, no skill definition file, no registry block and no release note was read.
- The comparison with Remotion is the repository documents own statement, including a single-run test written by the vendor; it was not repeated or measured here.
- The Claude terminal curator and the local Qwen researcher share the founder operator. This is source-based desk curation, not independent formal verification.
