# Stable Diffusion v1-1: training history, v1 lineage and an outdated example

SD v1-1: 237k steps at 256x256 (laion2B-en) + 194k at 512x512 (laion-high-resolution, 170M LAION-5B images >= 1024px). v1-2 resumed from it (515k steps, improved aesthetics); v1-3 and v1-4 resumed from v1-2. Example uses removed ["sample"] output; use .images. CreativeML OpenRAIL-M; card says research use.

Stable Diffusion v1-1 (CompVis; Rombach and Esser) is the first released checkpoint of the SD v1 latent diffusion model: an autoencoder with 8x downsampling to 4-channel latents, a UNet conditioned through cross-attention on the non-pooled output of a frozen CLIP ViT-L/14 text encoder.

Training: 237,000 steps at 256x256 on laion2B-en, then 194,000 steps at 512x512 on laion-high-resolution (170M LAION-5B images at 1024x1024 or larger). v1-2 resumed from v1-1 for 515,000 steps at 512x512 on laion-improved-aesthetics; v1-3 (195,000 steps) and v1-4 (225,000 steps on laion-aesthetics v2 5+) both resumed from v1-2, with 10% text-conditioning dropout for classifier-free guidance. Hardware: 32 x 8 A100s, AdamW, batch 2048, learning rate warmed up to 1e-4 over 10,000 steps. The checkpoints were compared at guidance 1.5 to 8.0 with 50 PLMS steps on 10,000 COCO2017 prompts at 512x512. The card's training-procedure text names v1-4, carried over from the v1-4 card.

Example: the card's diffusers code loads CompVis/stable-diffusion-v1-1, runs under torch autocast and reads pipe(prompt)["sample"][0], an early diffusers interface; current diffusers returns pipe(prompt).images[0]. Under 10 GB of VRAM, load with torch_dtype=torch.float16; guidance_scale (7.5 in the example) and schedulers such as LMSDiscreteScheduler can be passed in.

Limitations: imperfect photorealism, no legible text, weak compositionality, unreliable faces, mainly English captions, and LAION training data with adult material that needs extra safety measures for products. Licence: CreativeML OpenRAIL-M permits redistribution and commercial use with its use restrictions passed on, while the card describes intended use as research.
