Butcher's XVII shows an outline through two worked cases. The Iphigenia outline is a chain of about nine clauses by my count (a girl sacrificed and vanishing; transported to a land that sacrifices strangers; appointed to the ministry there; her brother later arrives; he is seized and about to be sacrificed; he reveals who he is and is saved), without names. The text puts the oracle's reason for his coming 'outside the general plan' and his purpose 'outside the action proper', and leaves the mode of recognition open between Euripides's and Polyidus's. Names come after; then episodes (for Orestes, the madness and the purificatory rite). The Odyssey is summarised in three sentences as 'the essence of the plot; the rest is episode'.

Curator qualifications: 'Universal-first' is a paraphrase; text says general outline/plan (0 'universal' in XVI-XVII).
