After reading six 2025-2026 benchmark papers, a safe statement is: on each paper's own tests, current video generators score well below ceiling on many physical behaviours, do better on some (reflection, buoyancy, communicating vessels, sand-pile angles) than others (momentum, collisions, melting with state change, persistence after the camera looks away), and visual quality does not predict physical consistency. Unsafe statements: that any model 'has learned the laws of physics', that a score is comparable across benchmarks, or that open or closed models are generally ahead. The papers do not test training-distribution generalisation, so they neither confirm nor refute 'learn' in the mechanistic sense.
