What it supplies: ImageMagick is a free and open-source software suite for editing and manipulating digital images. It can create, edit, compose or convert bitmap images in formats including JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF and PDF.
It has a command-line interface and APIs, is written in C, and runs on Linux, Windows and macOS.
Useful for: - Convert images from one format to another, for example PNG to JPEG.
- Resize, rotate, deskew, crop, flip or trim images.
- Script batch pipelines that process many images without manual intervention.
- Use colour management with profiles and read or write very large images.
First action: - Set up a security policy before use, choosing Open, Limited, Secure or Websafe from version 7.1.1-16.
- Learn command-line use from the usage examples site and the scripts and cookbook it links.
Prerequisites and limits: - The default build is Q16 HDRI; a Q8 non-HDRI build halves memory again with less precision.
- From 7.1.1-16, up to 64 channels can be enabled with a configure option; Windows enables it automatically.
- A legacy version 6 is also maintained.
- The README strongly advises a security policy tailored to your environment before use.
- Disabling HDRI or using Q8 builds reduces memory but loses precision and out-of-range pixel values.
The README calls ImageMagick free and open-source and links to a licence page, but does not state the licence terms in its text, so read that page and the repository licence before use or redistribution. Images you process carry their own rights.
Written from the README text only. Statements are as the README gives them; nothing was installed or run and no image was processed.
Based on README text only; the website pages, licence page and security policy pages were not read. No install or run was made.
