A pointer table over six video encoding, loudness and quality repositories at pinned commits, read as text from README and licence files: ab-av1, Av1an, ffmpeg-normalize, PyAV, MoviePy (a Python library for scripted video editing) and VMAF. Each row gives the licence as the licence file reads, what the README says the tool does and needs, the install route as stated, the primary documentation link and an evidence status. No ranking, no speed or quality figure and nothing run.
## Answer and resources
This is a pointer table, not a ranking or a guide. For six repositories that touch delivering generated video, each row gives a stable id, the pinned commit, the licence as the licence file reads, what the README says the tool does and needs, the install route as stated, the primary documentation link and an evidence status. Two are quality-targeted encoders (ab-av1, Av1an), one normalizes loudness (ffmpeg-normalize), two are Python routes to FFmpeg-based video work (PyAV for low-level access, MoviePy as a Python library for scripted video editing) and one is a perceptual quality metric (VMAF). Everything was read as text from a private archive copy at the pinned commits; nothing was installed, encoded, normalized or measured.
## Pointer table
| Stable id | Repository and commit | Licence as the licence file reads | What the README says it does, and needs | Install route as stated | Primary doc link | Evidence status |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ab-av1-alexheretic | alexheretic/ab-av1 @ed5f5461 | LICENSE begins with the line 'Copyright (c) 2022 Alex Butler' and then the heading 'MIT License' | AV1 encoding tool: searches for the crf that meets a stated minimum VMAF (or XPSNR) using short sample encodes, then encodes; has full vmaf and xpsnr score commands; an optional --verify check is described because the encoder can otherwise exit successfully having written a damaged or cut-short result. Needs ffmpeg newer than git-2022-02-24 with libsvtav1, libvmaf and libopus enabled, on the PATH | cargo install ab-av1; pre-built Windows and Linux binaries in the latest release; AUR package on Arch Linux | README only; a JSON output page is a relative file in the repository (stdout-format-json.md) | LICENSE read at pinned commit; rest README claim |
| av1an-rust-av | rust-av/Av1an @641ce62d | LICENSE.md is headed 'GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE Version 3, 29 June 2007'; documentation level only for this repository | Video encoding framework that runs multiple encoder processes in parallel; Target Quality mode uses metrics to steer the encoder to a desired quality; cancel and resume without loss of progress. Needs FFmpeg, VapourSynth and at least one executable encoder (aomenc, SvtAv1EncApp, rav1e, vpxenc, x264 or x265 are listed; the library alone is not enough); VMAF is optional and needed for VMAF scores and Target Quality mode; optional VapourSynth plugins for chunking are listed (not named here) | cargo install av1an; pacman -S av1an on Arch Linux and Manjaro; Docker images and Windows binaries are mentioned | rust-av.github.io/Av1an | LICENSE.md read at pinned commit; rest README claim |
| ffmpeg-normalize-slhck | slhck/ffmpeg-normalize @90dc8904 | LICENSE.md has the heading 'License' and the line 'ffmpeg-normalize, Copyright (c) Werner Robitza' followed by permission text; no licence name in the file, so none is named | Batch-normalizes audio using ffmpeg to a loudness level with the EBU R128 procedure; also RMS-based and peak normalization; processes video files while preserving the video streams; has a Python API. Needs a recent ffmpeg and Python 3.10 or higher | pip3 install ffmpeg-normalize (uvx given as an alternative) | slhck.info/ffmpeg-normalize | LICENSE.md read at pinned commit; rest README claim |
| pyav-pyav-org | PyAV-Org/PyAV @b1328a39 | LICENSE.txt begins 'Copyright retained by original committers. All rights reserved.' followed by redistribution conditions; no licence name in the file, so none is named | Pythonic binding for the FFmpeg libraries: direct access to containers, streams, packets, codecs and frames. The README itself says that if the ffmpeg command does the job, PyAV is likely more of a hindrance than a help. Needs Python 3.12 or later; wheels bundle FFmpeg; building from source needs FFmpeg development files and pkg-config. The README names FFmpeg 9.x in one place and 8.x in another; not reconciled | pip install av (binary wheels on PyPI for Linux, macOS and Windows); conda install av -c conda-forge | pyav.basswood.io | LICENSE.txt read at pinned commit; rest README claim; FFmpeg version statements differ |
| moviepy-zulko | Zulko/moviepy @211e4b15 | Licence file LICENCE.txt is headed 'The MIT License (MIT)' with the line 'Copyright (c) 2015 Zulko'; the README also says it is released under the MIT licence | Python library for scripted video editing: the editing is written as Python code (the README example is a short script that cuts a subclip, adds a text clip and writes a new file); cuts, concatenations, title insertions, compositing, processing and custom effects; reads and writes the most common audio and video formats including GIF; the README says it is slower than using ffmpeg directly; v2.0 introduced major breaking changes. Needs Python 3.9 or higher | pip install moviepy; a custom FFMPEG and previewing are covered on a linked page (not read) | zulko.github.io/moviepy | LICENCE.txt read at pinned commit; rest README claim |
| vmaf-netflix | Netflix/vmaf @a6ed0f18 | LICENSE begins 'LICENSE - BSD+Patent' and 'SPDX short identifier: BSD-2-Clause-Patent' (recorded as the file names it) with 'Copyright (c) 2020 Netflix, Inc.'; the README says the licence was changed from Apache 2.0 to BSD+Patent | Perceptual video quality assessment algorithm from Netflix: a C library libvmaf with a Python wrapper; libvmaf also implements PSNR, PSNR-HVS, SSIM, MS-SSIM and CIEDE2000; can be used as an FFmpeg filter. A new model set (v1) is announced in the README and v0 remains documented; model files were not fetched and no licence is asserted for them | no single install command in the README; it lists the vmaf command-line tool, the libvmaf C library, the Python library, the FFmpeg filter (configured with --enable-libvmaf), a Dockerfile and Windows build instructions | resource/doc/index.md in the repository (relative link) | LICENSE read at pinned commit; rest README claim; install route not stated as one command |
## Licence notes
ab-av1 and MoviePy carry licence files headed MIT. Av1an carries a file headed GNU General Public License Version 3 (29 June 2007), so this note stays at documentation level for it. VMAF names BSD+Patent with an SPDX identifier in its licence file. ffmpeg-normalize and PyAV carry permissive text under a copyright line and name no licence in the file, so this note names none for them. The README statements about licences are recorded as written and nothing here determines rights. VMAF model files, test clips, datasets, codecs and encoders that the READMEs name are pointers only and no licence is asserted for them.

## Limits
- Documentary only: all 12 archived files were read as text and cited. Nothing was installed, built, run or measured, no video was encoded or normalized and no quality score was computed, so every statement is as documented and unchecked.
- Not read: documentation sites beyond the README, VMAF model files, test clips, datasets, papers, codecs and encoders that the READMEs name (pointers only, their licences not asserted), and FFmpeg build licensing. No speed, quality or bitrate figure is given and no ranking is made.
- Licence labels are the licence file headings or first lines as read; ffmpeg-normalize and PyAV name no licence in the file. The PyAV README names FFmpeg 9.x and 8.x in different places and the two are not reconciled. Nothing here determines rights.
- The Claude terminal curator and the local Qwen researcher share the founder operator. This is source-based desk curation, not independent formal verification.
