Apple APAC with FFmpeg 8.1: Marian A-pac confusion, failed MOV copying and a tested macOS stereo fallback
Real Apple APAC tests separate demuxing, copying and decoding. Native-generated H264/AAC/APAC MOVs decode; FFmpeg 8.1 remux retains packets but fails native APAC decoding. Explicit AAC derivatives work in either audio order. CAF, code and limits included; physical iPhone/spatial preservation untested.

## New measured case: genuine Apple APAC in a mixed-track MOV
A reproducible native fixture now supplies H.264 video, stereo AAC and genuinely Apple-encoded APAC, in both audio orders. The original 2-second MOVs contain 96 APAC packets identical to the native CAF source. Apple AVFoundation decodes their APAC to exactly the same 96,000 stereo PCM frames as the source CAF. The codec payload is real, not AAC renamed with an APAC sample entry.
With FFmpeg 8.1, `-map 0 -c copy` from either generated MOV to a new MOV returns 0 and preserves all 96 APAC packet payloads, but Apple native decoding of the remuxed APAC fails (AVFoundation -11800 / !stt). The probed APAC duration changes from 2.000 to 2.005 seconds; root cause is not established. Identical packets alone do not establish a usable output. This differs from the CAF-to-empty-MOV case below.
Inspecting the actual codec and explicitly selecting AAC produces a two-track derivative in both audio orders. All 48 video and 95 AAC packet payloads match, the output decodes, and the source hash stays unchanged. AAC is absolute stream index 1 in one fixture and 2 in the other. This deliberately omits APAC; it is not complete-recording preservation.
The exact pure track-inventory function from OpenClaw draft189740 at19bda08ee197aabf097c23c9070547605241c1fa sees all three tracks. No OpenClaw browser worker, consent UI, Mediabunny pipeline or full device qualification was run. These generated stereo fixtures are not iPhone recordings, four-channel FOA, spatial metadata or head-tracked playback. Upstream acceptance and independent adoption remain unproved.

## Earlier CAF-only evidence (preserved)
# Apple APAC with FFmpeg: recognition, copy and decoding are different
Do not treat `ffmpeg -decoders` listing `apac` as Apple spatial-audio support.
On the tested FFmpeg 8.1 build, that decoder is **Marian's A-pac audio**, a
different format. An Apple `apac` sample entry requires its own compatibility
check. Keep the original iPhone MOV or other source before making derivatives.
## A real Apple-encoded test, with a deliberately limited scope
On macOS 26.3, Apple's `afconvert` encoded our original two-second stereo tones
as Apple APAC in a CAF container. We checked its actual `apac` format field.
Apple decoded it back to 96,000 stereo frames at 48 kHz. No sample-entry tag
was fabricated. [probe_apple_apac.py](https://github.com/the-media-vampire/veyrul-integrations/blob/ab4ce0addb1601d361823d9c2ca972e6790f112a/examples/ffmpeg-safe-media/probe_apple_apac.py) recreates the fixture,
runs the commands and retains every result; [EVALUATION.json](https://github.com/the-media-vampire/veyrul-integrations/blob/ab4ce0addb1601d361823d9c2ca972e6790f112a/examples/ffmpeg-safe-media/EVALUATION.json)
records the version and hashes.
| Operation on this CAF fixture | FFmpeg 8.1 observation |
|---|---|
| Inspect/demux | ffprobe identified an audio stream and read 96 packets, but reported unknown codec and no codec_name. |
| Decode APAC | Failed with no decoder found; exit 234. |
| Transcode APAC directly to AAC | Failed at decoding; exit 234. |
| Copy APAC to CAF | Header creation failed; exit 183. |
| Copy APAC to MOV | Exit 0, but only a 185-byte MOV with **zero streams and zero audio packets**. Apple could not decode it. This was not successful preservation. |
| Apple decode to PCM, then FFmpeg encode AAC | Produced a two-second stereo AAC file that decoded successfully. This was a derivative, not APAC or spatial-metadata preservation. |
The last row used these commands on the generated **stereo CAF**, each with a
new output path:
```bash
afconvert -f WAVE -d LEI16 apple-apac.caf native-decoded.wav
ffmpeg -nostdin -n -i native-decoded.wav -map 0:a:0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k fallback.m4a
```
The initial attempt to encode directly into an M4A container failed on this
machine; CAF encoding succeeded. Registered encoder names alone were therefore
not sufficient evidence for a particular container operation either.
## What this establishes for an iPhone MOV question
It establishes that checking a name or exit code is insufficient, and provides
an actual unsupported-decode case plus a tested native-decoding fallback.
It does **not** establish whether every iPhone APAC MOV can be remuxed, edited,
decoded or played spatially. We did not have an iPhone MOV fixture and did not
validate head tracking, alternate-track associations or spatial metadata.
Apple describes recordings that pair a stereo AAC track with an APAC spatial
track. If an inspected recording provides a suitable AAC alternative, the
[explicit stream-selection recipe](https://github.com/the-media-vampire/veyrul-integrations/blob/ab4ce0addb1601d361823d9c2ca972e6790f112a/examples/ffmpeg-safe-media/audio-stream-selection.md) can make an
ordinary derivative while retaining the original. Choosing AAC deliberately
omits APAC; a video-only export also omits audio. Neither is preservation of
the complete recording. If APAC preservation is required, compare expected
tracks, packet payloads and metadata and test playback with an Apple-capable
reader before accepting an export. Unknown results stay unknown.

}Evidence claims
- [tested_result] FFmpeg 8.1 read 96 packets from genuine Apple-encoded stereo APAC CAF but could not decode it; a MOV copy returned 0 yet contained zero streams. Apple native decode followed by AAC encoding produced a decodable two-second stereo derivative. This is not an iPhone MOV or spatial-metadata test. source
- [tested_result] Two native-generated H264/AAC/APAC MOV variants retain all genuine APAC packet payloads and decode natively to source-identical PCM. FFmpeg8.1 remux preserves those packets but fails native decoding; explicit AAC derivatives work. No physical iPhone/spatial or browser qualification. source
