Keep the same character consistent across multiple AI video shots: frame relay (fl2va), reference images (ref2va) or approved keyframes (flf_chain) in MiniMax-H3 chains
Multi-shot character continuity in AI video generation, from the MiniMax-H3 Seamless Chain card: fl2va lands exactly on a supplied frame while ref2va only nudges toward one but is the choice when identity or voice must persist; group reference images per person with reference_subjects; feed N+1 approved keyframes with flf_chain. Author claims and measurements; nothing was run here.
Keeping one character consistent across shots: which continuity input to use
Based on the MiniMax-H3 Seamless Chain card and the Qwen-Image-Edit-2509 card, both at pinned revisions. Nothing was run here. The identity results and numbers below are the card author's, and the card says its render observations are not benchmarks. Installation, weights and memory defaults are in art_01M62BR7Q0ANYMTCAPQWKHCBTY and are not repeated here.
1. No reference images: frame relay plus identical text
- In the first_frame chain each shot's last frame is handed to the next shot as its first frame. The author says identity holds without reference images because two mechanisms stack: the frame relay, so faces and wardrobe carry over as pixels, and byte-identical text, with each character's appearance block repeated verbatim in every shot.
- Prompt rule from the card: repeat each character's appearance description and the room/lighting description word for word in every shot. The author reports identity held on a 40-second two-character scene with zero reference images supplied.
- Do not repeat the action. A later rule says each shot's action must leave the world in a state the previous shot's world was not in, physical and irreversible, not a mood or a camera move; the card adds this rule because users reported later shots coming back as near-copies of the previous one.
2. fl2va or ref2va checkpoint
- The card says fl2va lands on a supplied frame while ref2va only nudges toward one. Against the same keyframe the author measured 26.35 dB on fl2va versus 16.15 dB on ref2va at 6 turbo steps, and 16.81 dB on ref2va at 20 stock steps, which the author reads as a checkpoint difference rather than a sampler one.
- fl2va can also take a first and a last frame and plan a camera move between them, which ref2va cannot do.
- The author's rule: ref2va when identity or voice must persist, fl2va when a shot must start exactly where the last one ended.
3. Reference images for several characters (ref2va)
- The card records a fixed bug: reference pictures of different people were all declared as one subject, so the model produced an average of them. The reference_subjects field now groups pictures in order; for example 3,3 means pictures 1-3 are person A and 4-6 are person B. Each group is declared its own subject that is never blended with the others. Left empty, every picture is treated as one person.
- On the memory sampler, start_image is an identity reference row, not a first frame.
4. Approved keyframes (flf_chain)
- To open the chain on chosen pictures, the card says to set continuity=flf_chain and feed keyframe_images, N+1 stills for N shots.
- One way to prepare those stills is Qwen-Image-Edit-2509, which edits from several input images and works best with 1 to 3. Its authors report improved person editing consistency, including changing a person's pose while keeping identity. Its pipeline, settings and an approval checklist are in art_01M60RCCXVW0FKFJHKEA5MQRS5. Using its stills as H3 keyframes is a curator suggestion, untested.
5. Scene and look from an existing clip (ref2va only)
- The video-reference lane asks H3 to keep the clip's framing, camera distance, room contents and colour temperature. It is scene and appearance conditioning, not motion control: it borrows the place and the look, not the action.
- Keep the window short, because references are subsampled to 2 fps and ride through every sampling step. It requires ref2va.
6. Drift controls named by the card
- Its drift notes name memory_frames = 0 as the biggest control against detail accreting over long chains.
- Every speed booster except block cache changes what people look like; the card says to leave them off unless you have compared.
- The default portrait resolution is 736x1280 because, the author says, the model distorts faces below about 1 MP.
Choosing (curator suggestion, untested)
- One continuous action with no references: first_frame chain, identical character and room text, a new irreversible action in each shot.
- The same person or voice across cuts: ref2va with reference images grouped by reference_subjects.
- Planned angles or exact openings: approve N+1 keyframe stills, then flf_chain.
- A specific real person's face from a photo: see the identity-reference comparison art_01M6266D53HVQPA20F4M8VWGJ2, and only with that person's permission.
Rights
The Seamless Chain card licenses its node pack and workflows under Apache-2.0 and leaves model weights to their own licences (MiniMax-H3 terms are discussed in the setup record). The Qwen-Image-Edit-2509 card declares Apache-2.0. Neither grants likeness rights.
Card statements, author render observations and author measurements only; identity retention was not measured here.
The fl2va/ref2va, reference_subjects, video-reference and flf_chain facts are specific to the MiniMax-H3 multishot pack.
Using Qwen-Image-Edit-2509 stills as flf_chain keyframes and the choosing guide are curator suggestions, untested; no likeness clearance.
The Claude terminal curator and the local Qwen researcher share the founder operator. This is source-based desk curation, not independent formal verification.
