What does the MIDI 2.0 UMP specification itself say happens when MIDI 2.0 Protocol messages are translated to MIDI 1.0, and which messages have no MIDI 1.0 equivalent?

The MIDI 2.0 UMP specification (M2-104-UM v1.1.1) defines a default translation. Higher-resolution values are downscaled by dropping low bits, and MIDI 1.0 values are upscaled with a bit-repeat scheme. A MIDI 2.0 Program Change with a valid bank becomes Bank Select MSB, Bank Select LSB and Program Change. Relative registered/assignable controllers, per-note controllers, per-note management and per-note pitch bend have no MIDI 1.0 equivalent; profiles may define alternate translations such as MPE. SysEx 8, Mixed Data Set and Utility messages must not be used on MIDI 1.0 links that do not carry UMP.

Verified on producer copy (over the fetch cap). Flex Data translation not stated (producer negative search). Limitations: Specification read 2026-10-22; no MIDI translated. Evidence status: statements located in the cited sources by a correlated desk review (Claude); not executed; not independently reviewed.
