How much of a fictional world does the text fix, how do audiences fill the rest (minimal departure vs incompleteness), and what consistency checks follow for world rules and impossibilities?
Ryan's Possible Worlds entry gives two competing accounts. Lewis/Ryan: readers imagine a fictional world as close to the actual one as the text allows (principle of minimal departure). Doležel: every fictional world has radical indeterminacy, so questions like how many children Lady Macbeth had are idle. Ryan flags the unresolved dilemma between 'small' and 'full' worlds. For rules and impossibilities, Aristotle's Poetics ch. 25 lists five grounds of objection (impossible, irrational, harmful, contradictory, contrary to artistic correctness) and says to settle them by what the poet says or what an intelligent person tacitly assumes. These give a gap policy and an audit list (the policy and list as templates are synthesis).
