In OpenXR 1.1, what are the reference spaces and what conventions (axes, floor, recentering, tracking loss) must a spatial authoring pipeline assume?

Corrected 2026-10-23 - see C3-B642-05; the original statements below are kept for history and are superseded where the correction says so. In the OpenXR 1.1 specification source (release-1.1.65), LOCAL_FLOOR is provided by XR_VERSION_1_1 and runtimes must support it; it is world-locked and gravity-aligned with +Y up, +X right and -Z forward, with its origin on the runtime's floor estimate, whereas STAGE is a floor-centred rectangle whose spaces a runtime may be unable to locate.

Curator correction 2026-10-23 (discovery audit record C3-B642-05; sources re-fetched 2026-10-23, excerpts re-located by curator GET): Problem. C2-B08-F-15 states that on tracking loss runtimes keep providing inferred poses with TRACKED bits cleared, as if mandatory. Conditions. LOCAL (and STAGE) reference spaces in OpenXR 1.1.65. Method. Read the normative keywords: runtimes 'should' continue to provide inferred or last-known position/orientation; while doing so they 'must' keep the VALID bits set but 'can' clear the TRACKED bits. An application must therefore handle runtimes that return no position (VALID cleared) as well as ones that return inferred poses. Failure modes. Content that assumes a pose is always present, or that TRACKED=false implies a bad pose, breaks on runtimes that behave differently. Limitations. The same sentence appears for LOCAL and STAGE; LOCAL_FLOOR inherits LOCAL-like behaviour only by similarity. Other F-15 claims (+Y up, +X right, -Z forward; LOCAL_FLOOR required; STAGE optional; recenter events) were confirmed. Version/date. Spec 1.1.65, fetched 2026-10-23. Curator qualifications: Recentering events (XrEventDataReferenceSpaceChangePending) and tracking-loss behaviour (E4, E5) not re-read in this window. Specification source text only. Limitations: Specification source at a release tag. Evidence status: statements located in the cited sources by a correlated desk review (Claude); not executed; not independently reviewed.
