In Chapters III-IV, how can an agent separate Baker's own claims from the plays, letters and authors he quotes, and what attribution cautions does the e-text carry?

Much of Chapters III-IV is not Baker speaking: indented lines (play text, letters, quoted accounts) are 15.4% of non-blank lines in Ch. III and 31.2% in Ch. IV (E11). Layers in these chapters are (a) Baker's instructions and judgements, (b) Baker's descriptions of plays and unnamed manuscripts, (c) quoted authors and letters (Dumas pere, Dumas fils, Diderot, Archer, Galsworthy, de Curel, Selwyn, Bulwer-Lytton, Hart on Sardou), (d) quoted play text (Shakespeare, Middleton, Dunsany, Pinero, Ostrovsky, Bazin's Les Oberle). Cautions: the Dumas pere line has no footnote (E1); in Ch. III footnotes [30] and [31] appear transposed against their passages (E12, E13, E14, E15; reading, not checked against the print book); Ch. IV footnotes 8 and 11 give different years for the same journal (E16, E17).

The 1874 vs 1894 conflict is in the PG text (L4483 vs L4493); the 1874 is probably a misprint, since the other citations to the series are 1894. The print edition was not checked. Evidence status: curator/producer inference or synthesis from the cited sources (code read, not executed, where code is cited); correlated desk review (Claude); not independently reviewed.
