Inspected studies use: continuous per-moment fear ratings with fMRI and between-viewer synchrony (Hudson, N = 37 plus replication); skin conductance, ECG and nine-point retrospective ratings (Chun, N = 50); continuous expectation ratings plus retrospective startle/distress/tension/enjoyment ratings (Acosta and Sears, unreviewed); and focus-group discussion (Kershaw). The jump-scare paper says classic startle measures (heart rate, skin conductivity, facial EMG) have used probe tones, not film stingers. For an agent without participants, only the self-report scale design is reusable.
