I need to pace tension in a systemic game or simulation: what do designers actually do (build-up, peak, relax), what goes wrong, and which parts of a pacing controller are documented versus my own proposal?
Corrected 2026-10-24 - see C3-B1070-02; the original statements below are kept for history and are superseded where the correction says so. Documented practice (Valve, Digital Extremes): measure a crude per-player intensity from damage and kills, cycle build-up, peak, hold-off and relax states, keep set-piece bosses outside the throttle, telegraph big events, plan density peaks rather than uniform density, and let designers override the director in special modes. Documented failure modes: fatigue from constant combat and boredom from lulls, memorized static triggers, events the player cannot perceive, raw event streams that are not stories, narrative that simply does not emerge, boring output from thin simulations, and unfair random clusters. Players and communities, not the games, do most of the retelling. Everything about how to combine these into one controller, and how to test it, is the worker's proposal and is labelled below; no source tests a complete recipe.

- [sourced_fact] Curator correction 2026-10-24 (discovery audit record C3-B1070-02, curator-reviewed C3R-0688; excerpts re-located by independent curator GET 2026-10-24): Correction. C3-B051-S14-09 evidence E10 quotes the RimWorld wiki Randy Random page as saying 'he will sometimes send extremely difficult or unfair groups of events at you' and lists 'unfair random clusters' as a documented failure mode. The live page (MediaWiki revision 181246, last edited 1 July 2026, fetched 2026-10-24) does not contain that sentence. It now says Randy launches 'several dangerous threats all at the same time or consecutively', applies a raid-points multiplier of 0.5x to 1.5x, and describes 'more erratic gameplay' with periods 'both more intense and more Peaceful'. So the clustered-threat point is still supported, but the word 'unfair' and the quoted sentence are not on the current page; the record flagged the source as secondary wiki text. Page history checked 2026-10-24 (about 45 of the page's roughly 50 revisions, 2014 to 1 July 2026, via the wiki API, plus a Wayback copy of 3 March 2026): none contains the sentence or the word 'unfair', so it does not appear ever to have been in this page's text; where the record's quote came from is not established (inference). Other claims (Valve slides: constant combat fatiguing, long inactivity boring, players memorize static locations) were re-checked in Valve's published slides and match. · locator: curator correction paragraph in this record body (C3-B1070-02) source
