Which scope (waveform, RGB parade, vectorscope, histogram, gamut diamond) should be used to check what, and does a vendor's '0-100%' rule match EBU R 103's tolerance?

Blackmagic's SmartScope manual assigns luma legality to the waveform (keep blacks at or above 0% and whites at or below 100%), colour-channel legality to the RGB parade ('should be used for checking for illegal colors'), colour balance and tint to the vectorscope, and states a vectorscope alone cannot show illegal levels; a histogram cannot show colour illegality. Tektronix' WFM5200 manual adds that signals legal in digital YCbCr may be illegal when transcoded to RGB and provides Diamond/Spearhead RGB gamut displays with adjustable thresholds. Both vendor texts speak of 0-100% as the limits, whereas EBU R 103 tolerates a preferred band to about -5%/+105% and flags gamut errors only when above 1% of the image.

Curator qualifications: All quotes verified, along with the absence claims (skin/flesh 0 in the Tektronix texts; '75%' 0 in the note). The flagged conflict is correctly framed by the producer as different policies (vendor 0-100% teaching limit vs R 103 preferred tolerance and 1%-of-image trigger), not a contradiction about one threshold. Label as policy difference (vendor teaching vs broadcast tolerance recommendation); the applicable limit is set by the deliverable spec. Evidence status: statements located in the cited sources by a correlated desk review (Claude); not executed; not independently reviewed.
