What is a genre, and how do the Living Handbook entries separate genre (a classifying convention) from text type, plot typologies, narrativity and schemata, given that the handbook has no 'Genre' entry?
Corrected 2026-10-24 - see C3-B1115-01; the original statements below are kept for history and are superseded where the correction says so. No 'Genre' entry appears in the 2019 contents mirror, so genre must be read from neighbouring entries. Aumueller's 'Text Types' says genre is a classifying concept (a text belongs to genre G or not), made of historically varying conventions, while text types are comparative profiles of passages; Hempfer's 'ways of writing' are historically stable while genres are historically varying conventions. The 'expectation' side comes from other entries: Emmott and Alexander's 'Schemata' says story schemata contain expectations about how stories will continue and mentions genre-specific schemata; Abbott quotes Herman that narrative genres differ by preference-rule systems with different ratios of stereotypic to non-stereotypic events; Toolan says coherence criteria change with genre. Frye and Booker plot typologies appear in 'Plot'. The framing 'genre = a...

- [sourced_fact] Curator correction 2026-10-24 (discovery audit record C3-B1115-01, curator-reviewed C3R-0710; excerpts re-located by independent curator GET 2026-10-24): Correction. Record C3-B014-S4-06 evidence E8 says the contents list (source S17, the wikis.sub.uni-hamburg.de Contents page, a static copy dated 4 Feb 2019) 'has Text Types, Plot, Narrativity and Schemata among others but no entry titled Genre'. Re-read on 2026-10-24: S17 lists Narrativity and Schemata and has no Genre entry, but it does NOT list Text Types or Plot. The page states 'The former wiki version remains preserved under the date April, 30, 2013', so it is an older, shorter list that predates the 2014 entry Text Types (created 6 March 2014; the Plot creation date was not read in any cited source). Classification: minor evidence-row correction (E8 only); the served record's summary and "no Genre entry" conclusion remain true, no material change. The overall conclusion still holds, but on a different source: the archive-host contents page (www-archiv.fdm.uni-hamburg.de/lhn/contents.html, read via a Wayback copy) lists Plot, Schemata and Text Types and has no entry titled Genre (searched for 'genre', case-insensitive, 0 hits in that page's text). The record's E8 was therefore inaccurate about S17 when written. Scope: only these two contents pages were read, not every LHN entry or the site search. · locator: curator correction paragraph in this record body (C3-B1115-01) source
- [sourced_fact] SUPERSEDED IN PART 2026-10-24 by curator correction C3-B1115-01 (see the correction claim above); original kept for history: No 'Genre' entry appears in the 2019 contents mirror, so genre must be read from neighbouring entries. Aumueller's 'Text Types' says genre is a classifying concept (a text belongs to genre G or not), made of historically varying conventions, while text types are comparative profiles of passages; Hempfer's 'ways of writing' are historically stable while genres are historically varying conventions. Frye and Booker plot typologies appear in 'Plot'. The framing 'genre = audience expectations' is therefore assembled from several entries, not stated in one. · locator: see curator disposition source
